Stage 1b Clearing, striping back to bare

Labour

Elbow grease

Date

Summer 2024

We began by thoroughly clearing the space, removing any unwanted debris and ensuring the area was ready for transformation. Once cleared, we dug over the entire plot, turning the soil and making it rich and aerated. Any organic material that couldn’t be worked back into the soil was composted, ensuring that nothing went to waste and contributing to the creation of nutrient-rich compost for future use.

Next, we focused on levelling the ground, smoothing out any uneven areas to create a more stable and accessible surface for the garden. To keep the area clear of weeds as we moved forward, we covered the space with weed prevention sheets. This simple yet effective step helped maintain a clean slate, allowing us to move on to the next phase of the project without worrying about unwanted plant growth taking over.

With the ground prepared and cleared, we set our sights on laying out the central meeting place of the garden—a space designed to encourage social gatherings, workshops, and shared experiences. However, before we could begin constructing this communal space, we needed to acquire the necessary materials, ensuring we had everything required to build a functional, beautiful, and sustainable centre for the garden. We carefully sourced materials that would not only serve our immediate needs but also align with our values of sustainability and environmental consciousness.
